TOOL GUIDE · TEXT SLUGS
How this slug rule works
The generator normalizes the text into a decomposed Unicode form, lowercases it, removes combining accent marks in its supported range, and replaces sequences that are not Unicode letters or numbers with a single hyphen. Leading and trailing hyphens are removed. For example, spacing and punctuation between words generally become one separator.
This is a simple readability transformation, not a complete international transliteration system. Some scripts require language-specific transliteration, and removing diacritics can alter distinctions or reduce correct spelling. Review names and non-Latin text with a fluent speaker where appropriate.
A slug is not an identity or security token
Different source phrases can produce the same slug. A slug can be edited, guessed, or changed when a title changes. If an application needs stable uniqueness, generate a separate identifier and enforce uniqueness in the system that owns the records. Do not put private information into public URL slugs; URLs can appear in browser history, logs, referrers, and shared links.
Review before publishing
- Check readability, spelling, and the expected language.
- Confirm punctuation removal does not merge words ambiguously.
- Check whether the receiving platform requires a particular maximum length or character set.
- Ensure the URL path is unique within the destination.
For other transformations, visit the FormatInstant tool guide directory or the formatting guide library.
Slug creation runs in your browser. It does not reserve, publish, or check a URL on another website.
